The Game Awards statue was for Divinity all along, and it looks gruesome
When Geoff Keighley posted that image of a medieval-like monolith out in the desert, gamers around the world scrambled to find out what title it was for.
This was revealed in emphatic fashion during The Game Awards, featuring not only a trailer but also some real people in costume acting to add even more flavor.
This was all in aid of Larian Studio’s Divinity, seemingly a new take on the franchise that we last heard from in 2017.
The new Divinity looks blood-curdlingly grotesque
The reveal trailer for the game started out a little upbeat and almost jolly with bards playing jaunty music. This, however, did not last long, as you slowly realize that a man is literally being burned alive.
You see all the gory details with limbs being broken down and blood literally gushing from the man’s head as the ritual takes place.
Keighley touted this new take on Divinity as Larian’s “biggest game ever”, making it even larger than that of the much-loved Baldur’s Gate 3, which is a massive feat in itself.
As for what this means for gameplay, we’re not exactly sure. It is likely that we’ll be getting a 3D isometric RPG, as this is what Larian does best, but there are some rumors floating around that it could be an action-adventure RPG instead.
This would make sense with the Original Sin titles being more Baldur’s Gate style and this new entry dropping that naming convention, but we’ll just have to wait and see.
But the devs said they weren’t working on Divinity?
While all the speculation was going on as to which game the statue was for, various game studios came out to say that this stunt wasn’t from them.
Larian Studios’ Cromwelp did also state on his X account that they are not working on Divinity Original Sin 3, confusing those who were almost certain it was this franchise that was being marketed.
This was made even more puzzling with some managing to find that a new Divinity-related trademark was filed.
Where we needed to focus our attention here was in the wording of that aforementioned X post. It specifically says “there aren’t currently any plans for a new Divinity Original Sin 3 game”, and the reveal trailer of the next instalment names the game as just ‘Divinity’.
Cromwelp cheekily posted after the trailer aired that he told us “it wasn’t Original Sin 3” just to throw more salt in the wound for the bait and switch.
