The game follows Arthur Morgan, an outlaw in the notorious Van der Linde gang. Due to a botched robbery, the gang are being hunted by federal agents and the best bounty hunters in the nation; they are forced to rob and fight their way across the heartland of America in order to survive. 

With divisions being formed from within the once tight-knit group, Arthur must choose to follow his own ideals or be loyal to the group that raised him.
