In recent years, there has been a real resurgence in retro gaming, with many getting those dusty consoles out of the attic or repurchasing their favorite games to play once more.

Something that has also been on the rise is the creation of new ‘retro’ games for the likes of the Game Boy, usually distributed via ROM format, so those who have the equipment can either play on their PC through emulator or on physical hardware with a special cartridge.

Ogre Pixel, known for creating a variety of indie titles including the more pixely Swipe Casters, Warcher Defenders, and Pixel Stars, is back with Black Tower Enigma — a Game Boy-esque retro style riddle-solving fantasy adventure.

Akin to their other projects, Black Tower Enigma is funded through Kickstarter and required just over $9,500 to be fully funded. It hit this goal in just four hours, and at the time of writing, it has received over double this amount with 25 days left.

What this means is that the game will not only receive a Game Boy, Nintendo Switch, and Steam release, but also an additional mini cave with more puzzles to solve. If the subsequent stretch goal gets hit, a new type of book will be included featuring jokes and funny quotes.

There are a bunch of different backer tiers on offer, ranging from ‘Game Rom’, which nets you a digital game copy and digital manual, to an ‘Associate Producer’ slot, which gives you everything under the sun related to the game, including your name in the credits.

If you like the sound of what’s on offer with Black Tower Enigma, you can download a demo and get a feel for the puzzle-solving adventure ahead of putting down your cash on a copy.

It’s fantastic to see these retro style games being made today and we hope this trend of new Game Boy titles and the like continues, opening up even more 8-bit adventures and beyond!
