Is Mewgenics multiplayer, or single-player only?

If you’ve been eyeing up Mewgenics and thinking you need to get another cat lover involved in this wacky breeding/fighting/tactical crossover game, you’re not the only one.

With The Binding of Isaac now dabbling in online multiplayer, it’s a fair question to ask whether Edmund McMillen’s latest chaotic cat experiment is built for getting a full cat squad together, or if you’re stuck on a solo adventure.

Here’s what we know on Mewgenics’ multiplayer elements, or lack there of.

Does Mewgenics have multiplayer functionality?

Considering the premise of the game is to create a cat army and fight others, you might have thought there would be a multiplayer element added in, allowing you to go head to head with other feline fanatics.

As previously mentioned, McMillen’s other big roguelike, The Binding of Isaac, has had online multiplayer chatter for a while, so you and many others probably wondered if Mewgenics would follow suit, especially with the game’s run-based structure feeling like it could support versus or challenge modes.

Sadly, though, Mewgenics is single-player only at launch, with no co-op, PvP, or online modes currently available.

While this might be a disappointment, there’s plenty of game to get through since there are so many cat variations possible, along with deciphering which voice cameo goes with which animal.

Could Mewgenics get multiplayer later down the line?

At this current time, multiplayer in Mewgenics is not currently planned. However, it is also not totally impossible.

In the Steam Community ‘BIG Q&A,’ McMillen stated, “Online vs isn’t planned but isn’t 100% off the table” for something they might explore in the future.

The Binding of Isaac did not launch with multiplayer functionality either, but with more content added, this has become a reality, meaning Mewgenics could very well follow suit.

So, don’t buy it expecting a roadmap to co-op or ranked cat battles, but also don’t be shocked if McMillen gets curious down the line and experiments with something online.
