Hollow Knight: Silksong to get a free expansion in 2026
Developers Team Cherry have announced that Hollow Knight: Silksong is set to get a free expansion titled Sea of Sorrow in 2026.
The announcement came in the form of a blog post, where we were also treated to a trailer for the free DLC.
Silksong has been a huge critical and commercial success, selling over seven million copies in its first three months and winning the Best Action-Adventure title at The 2025 Game Awards.
The developers added:
“It’s a truly staggering number of players, more than we could have ever expected (enough to crash all of the storefronts!). Watching the community grow, seeing the amazing art, the mods, the unexpected strategies, and the support between players through the game’s challenges has been hugely rewarding for us here at home. Your continued enthusiasm remains a massive motivator as we work towards expanding the game even further.”
After waiting eight years for the sequel to the original Hollow Knight, fans will be surprised, but also delighted, that there are already plans for an expansion to the sequel.
The game follows the story of Hornet, Hallownest’s former princess and protector after she is captured and sent to Pharloom, an former religious kingdom that is now ravaged by the “Haunting”, a madness that causes bugs to be part of the undead.
Throughout the 2D thriller, you explore the haunted land, encounter the inhabitants, and help restore the kingdom alongside bugs that have escaped the Haunting.
What will the Hollow Knight: Silksong Sea of Sorrow expansion entail?
With the Sea of Sorrow naming, it’s pretty clear that the expansion will have a subaqueous setting, and we already can’t wait to explore. Team Cherry has also confirmed that it will feature new bosses and tools.
Though no specific date was announced, the developers have stated that it will arrive in 2026.
