Games like Minecraft have continued to crop up for over a decade to capitalize on its success and bring about unique gameplay twists. Hytale has the potential to be Minecraft’s next big competitor, with the communities of both games pointing out the similarities and differences between the two.

Comparisons of Hytale vs Minecraft ignited when Hytale was announced in 2018. They each have multiple layers to their gameplay and mechanics, so we’ve highlighted the main differences between the two to demonstrate how Hytale will extend the beloved formula, while remaining unique.

The origins of Hytale

Apart from the fact that the Hytale game is aesthetically reminiscent of Minecraft and shares similar mechanics, Hytale actually began as a Minecraft server known as Hypixel. Launched in 2013 by Hypixel Studios founder Simon Collins-Laflamme, Hypixel has since become one of the most popular Minecraft servers worldwide.

Hypixel contains a plethora of mini games, with one of the most notable being Bed Wars: it tasks you and three teammates with defending your bed, so you can continue respawning to destroy other teams’ beds and compete to be the last team standing. There’s also Murder Mystery, where players adopt the role of either the Murderer, Detective, or Innocent, and the latter two must work together using social deduction to reveal the murderer.

Since the Hypixel server began in Minecraft, you’d be forgiven for thinking Hytale will just be another version of Minecraft. However, Hypixel’s ambition opened up new opportunities for what a Minecraft server could be with custom mechanics and unique progression that set it apart.

Hypixel’s continued popularity in Minecraft brought a new meaning to multiplayer and highlighted the potential for user-generated content, so much so that Hypixel’s innovations influenced other PvP servers and gaming experiences as a whole. The Roblox version of Bed Wars, for example, has almost 11 billion visits, while Murder Mystery 2 on Roblox has nearly 23 billion.

Although its origins lie in Minecraft, Hytale has enough innovations to differentiate itself, thereby expanding into its own standalone title and avoiding the status of just another Minecraft clone.

Hytale vs Minecraft: The sandbox world

Despite minigames being a core part of the Hypixel server, official ones won’t be available when Hytale makes its Early Access debut. While a dedicated team works on delivering minigames, players can begin creating their own. So, without its famous minigames, how will the sandbox world of Hytale differ from Minecraft?

The core Hytale game experience will be an RPG with a story and quests, with RPG elements adding depth to the survival aspects. You will still be able to explore procedurally generated worlds containing dungeons and other hostile creatures, and even build to your heart’s content. An eventual Adventure mode planned for Hytale will further refine the game’s RPG features, while exploration will remain the foundation.

Hytale’s blocky world will feature survival and base building across its biomes. Growing crops, taking care of your pets, constructing vehicles, and letting your imagination run wild on custom builds are all possible. Modding is expected to take this to a new level and allow for more creativity than ever, even during Hytale Early Access.

Minecraft-like games usually have Creative modes, but Hytale’s will be far more robust. Yes, you can enter flying mode, create masterpieces, and do whatever you please in the Creative mode of both games, but Hytale integrates advanced features that would otherwise require mods in Minecraft. Hytale features scripted brushes that enable the creation of terrain, including mountains and procedurally generated ruins. There are 100 models that you can spawn in your creative world or edit to your liking, prefabs you can add to your world, measuring tools, and so much more. Hytale’s creator-first approach will allow for even more freedom to bring a world to life with few limitations, all within the game.

Hytale is an MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) game focused on community. It’s unknown how many players Hytale servers will support, but if the Hypixel Minecraft server is anything to go by, parties of up to 100 could be formed.

Minecraft mods are supplementary to the experience, while modding is core to Hytale’s identity. It’s possible to mod everything in Hytale, both content-wise and server-side. Even those with little development or modding knowledge are expected to be able to create exciting in-game experiences. You can create your own custom servers, maps, adventures, minigames, and so much more.

Unlike Minecraft, you can join any modded Hytale server without downloading external mods or client packs. Everything you need to join an experience with mods or create your own is server-side. Even though mod support won’t be completely polished in Hytale Early Access, the features available will indicate how modding differs in Hytale through powerful built-in creation tools made with modders in mind. Those in-game tools include an Asset Editor, A Blockbench plug-in to create Hytale-compatible models, textures, and animations, an Asset Graph Editor, and more.

Hytale server hosting and its approach to modding reflect the game’s creator-driven philosophy, which extends beyond the principles implemented in Minecraft. Making modding advanced and accessible allows adventures in Hytale to be more personalized than ever.

Hytale vs Minecraft: Combat and crafting

Hytale’s combat will be broader because of its focus on RPG elements, and it’s expected to draw on different playstyles. Hytale gameplay footage released in November 2025 showed a playable character slashing at a skeleton using dual daggers. With those daggers, you’re able to jump further distances, and all weapons appear to have a charge meter that allows you to perform a powerful attack once filled.

Magic is also expected to be incorporated into many areas, but it’s unclear how. It would make sense if it applied to weapons; perhaps players will be able to infuse weapons with magic or use spells in combat. Either way, a fantasy feel is expected to run throughout Hytale something that isn’t heavily drawn upon in the Minecraft world.

Responding to the ongoing discourse surrounding the comparisons to Minecraft on social media, Collins-Laflamme explains that crafting separates Hytale from games like Minecraft and is more comparable to “games like Valheim/Terraria instead of grid crafting. So it’s very different and allows us to go in a different direction.” The crafting systems in Valheim and Terraria are deeply intertwined with progression, as many key crafting materials are only dropped after certain bosses are defeated.

In the same X post regarding Hytale vs Minecraft, Collins-Laflamme says, “Minecraft is one of the greatest games of all time; it has perfected many designs that no one appreciates. Hytale is going in a very, very different path; we are more going into adventure aspects as a core game (with modding in mind). We will not have things like Redstone, for example.”

With the numerous core mechanics in the Hytale game going in a different direction and the emphasis on user-generated content, it’s going to take a lot more than modding Redstone into Hytale to make its gameplay loop like Minecraft’s.
