Hytale saved from cancellation: Where does the game go from here?
It’s not every day a game goes into development at an indie studio, is bought by an AAA company, gets canceled, and is then reacquired by its original developer. However, Hytale is a game that won’t go quietly, as Hypixel, the studio behind Hytale, is committed to delivering the game.
Following the Hytale news that the game is back in development at Hypixel, we’ve got a roundup of what fans can expect to see going forward.
What is Hytale?
Hytale is a sandbox game with RPG elements. It’s a procedurally generated world that has dungeons and creatures, combat, exploration, block building, and so much more. Hytale will have a major focus on community creations through official mod support and free official modding tools. Other games that have modding integrated this way are Roblox and Garry’s Mod, for example. Even with Hytale’s revival, the developers intend to maintain their original vision for the game, so all these aspects are expected to be implemented either on the Hytale release date or late on.
How did Hytale make a comeback?
Riot Games acquired Hypixel in 2020. After being in development for over ten years, Hytale was canceled by Riot Games in June 2025. It was reportedly canceled due to the game becoming too ambitious and not being as far along as it needed to be. After Riot Games closed Hypixel and with Hytale canceled, it was always the goal for studio founder Simon Collins-Laflamme, to get the game back and deliver a finished product.
In response to the Hytale announcement on X from Collins-Laflamme, indicating that the title was making a comeback, Riot Games responded: “After evaluating multiple offers, we’ve reached an agreement to return Hytale to [Simon], giving this community its best shot at experiencing a revised version of the game. Wishing the team the best of luck for what’s ahead.”
Hypixel has since rehired over 30 developers who originally worked on the Hytale game, with even more ex-studio members expecting to return. The team is committed to continuing where they left off with Hytale as a fully independent body, while devoting to funding the game for the next 10 years.
What was the community reaction to Hytale’s cancellation?
Hytale managed to garner a dedicated community and build up almost a decade’s worth of hype, despite never releasing a product. It was branded the “Minecraft killer” and “Minecraft 2” for its potential and ambition in the sandbox space. As expected, the reaction from the community was one of sadness and disappointment.
Many potential players pointed the finger at Riot Games for mismanaging the game and overpromising more than they could handle. In some ways, its cancellation wasn’t a surprise, because there had been radio silence on Hytale since March 2025, until its cancellation. Following the Hytale announcement that the game is back, a new sense of hope has returned to the community, who will be actively involved when the game launches.
It has already been confirmed that Hytale server hosting and modding are a top priority. It’s going to be possible to mod almost everything in Hytale, and even those without experience are expected to be able to make detailed creations. Mod support will allow players to create custom servers, maps, adventures, minigames, and so much more. Hytale will provide the server source code access within the next several months.
The current state of Hytale
Hypixel Studios hasn’t actually been involved with Hytale since 2020. What Hypixel has inherited is two engines that were in development: the Legacy Engine and a Cross-platform Engine. According to Hypixel, the Cross-platform Engine is significantly behind when it comes to gameplay, prompting them to adopt the Legacy Engine, which is playable now. There are plans to make the Legacy Engine cross-platform later.
Right now, Hytale gameplay is made up of over 100 NPCs and thousands of items and blocks, but many aren’t properly configured, resulting in unbalanced loot and swarms of unwanted bugs. Official minigames that were going to be a key component of Hytale won’t be playable in an Early Access launch due to them simply not being ready, and the team is prioritizing the stability of the game instead. Of course, Hypixel has gone back to being a small studio, so development of Hytale will be a slow process.
What is next for Hytale?
There won’t be a Hytale beta, but an Early Access release date will be announced soon, which will have as many modding tools and as much access as possible. Hypixel tells players to expect bugs, rough edges, unbalanced content, and frequent updates that break aspects of this Early Access experience. The developers have indicated that they are in no rush to reach Hytale 1.0, with Early Access expected to last at least a few years.
In the not-so-distant future, though, details will be announced on pricing and editions, as well as updated gameplay footage and screenshots for the first time since Hypixel re-acquired the game. Patch notes are also on the way, along with full details on modding capabilities and a Hytale game roadmap.
It’s unlikely that Hytale will replace titans such as Minecraft and Roblox, but it has the potential to be successful. With its ambitious world and plenty of freedom for players to create their own experiences, Hytale gameplay will have a lot to offer if it can live up to its promises.
