October is upon us, and for those who enjoy scary games, it’s the best time of year to play them. With the days getting darker and new horror video games coming out almost every week, it’s a great time to be a fan of the genre.

To help you pick your next favorite game this Halloween, we’ve listed the top 10 best psychological horror games below, going in ascending order based on how scary they are. We’ve also included a brief genre definition, looking at its overlap with the survival horror niche.

What defines psychological horror?

Horror games come in all shapes and sizes, focusing on everything from werewolves to underwater cults. One of the most popular subgenres is psychological horror, as games in this niche can provide genuinely unsettling experiences.

Instead of focusing on external threats, psychological horror tends to focus on the internal – characters slip into alternate worlds, struggle with seeing things that aren’t truly there, and are left with the inability to trust what’s right in front of them. It’s a more personal, intrusive style of horror, often leaning less on jump scares and more on slow-burning tension.

There may still be an external threat or enemy in a psychological horror game – particularly with those that cross over with the survival horror niche – but there’ll often be a thematic tie back.

Speaking of survival horror, the two subgenres often go hand in hand. Games like Silent Hill, The Evil Within, or Alien: Isolation are great examples of this; these games focus on providing tense, unnerving experiences that get under your skin, while still featuring combat, resource management, and exploration mechanics.

You’ll find several stellar examples of survival-psychological titles in our psychological horror games list below.

10. Slay the Princess – The Pristine Cut (2023)

Slay the Princess isn’t your typical psychological horror game; it’s a visual novel, whereas most of the psychological horror games in this list are first-person titles.

That’s not to say that Slay the Princess is anything but unsettling, though. The story is dark and twisted, with an existential flavor of horror, and The Pristine Cut can be enjoyed on current-gen consoles, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

9. Amnesia: The Dark Descent (2010)

Amnesia: The Dark Descent bridges the gap between survival horror and psychological horror – and regardless of where you place it, it’s a must-play. Despite being one of the oldest games on this list, it’s one of the scariest horror games around.

The Dark Descent is one of the best Nintendo Switch psychological horror games, thanks to its agonizingly slow-burning story, disgusting monster design, and rich world-building. It’s also available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

8. SOMA (2015)

Frictional Games is a household name in the horror gaming world, and with good reason. This team goes beyond making just good psychological horror games – Frictional creates horrifically tense and genre-defining experiences, like the underwater gem that is SOMA.

With threats ranging from evil robots to gnarled alien creatures, SOMA is both terrifying and immersive. It’s one of the best psychological horror games on Steam, and you can also pick it up on Xbox One and PS4.

7. Alan Wake (2010)

While Alan Wake would arguably fit into the survival horror and action-adventure niches just as well as psychological horror, it’s an exemplary title that highlights the best bits of psychological horror video games.

With an episodic format, Alan Wake is a gripping, small-town experience, focusing on the titular author and the nightmarish forces he faces in the town of Bright Falls. Including the remaster, this game is available on Xbox 360, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

6. Outlast (2013)

Outlast expertly blends survival horror and psychological horror into one gristly package, placing the player in the shoes of a journalist trying to get to the rotten core of the Mount Massive Asylum.

It’s one of the best psychological horror games on PC, offering frightening enemies and an intense story. It’s also available on PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

5. Silent Hill 2 (2001/2024)

It doesn’t matter whether you’re talking about the original or the remake – Silent Hill 2 is a masterpiece. It’s one of the games that toes the line between survival horror and psychological terror, with a deeply unsettling story, beautifully morbid world, and iconic monsters.

The original 2001 game is one of the best Xbox psychological horror games, also available on PS2 and PC. The Bloober Team remake is available on PS5 and PC.

4. Silent Hill f (2025)

The newest addition to the Silent Hill franchise is unlike any of its predecessors – and from the perspective of a long-time fan, this is a great thing. The original games are masterful, but Silent Hill f manages to paint a uniquely disturbing world that’ll swallow you whole.

It’s one of the best PS5 psychological horror games around, and it’s also available on PC, too. It’s not the monsters or world design that make Silent Hill f truly disturbing – although these are exquisite – it’s the upsetting, intense story.

3. MADiSON (2022)

MADiSON has some sequences that are sure to unsettle even the most seasoned of horror fans. This puzzling horror game focuses on a camera, and it’s got a fantastic story to pair with its unnerving world design.

MADiSON is available to play on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.

2. Alien: Isolation (2014)

Alien: Isolation remains one of the scariest psychological-survival titles in the niche. While it leans more towards survival than psychological, the pacing, atmosphere, and style of terror make it an intrusive, unnerving experience that still falls into the psychological niche.

Immaculately emulating the tense atmosphere of the movie franchise, this game will have you checking around every corner for a snarling xenomorph. It’s available to play on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch.

1. Visage (2020)

Out of all the psychological horror games to choose from in 2025, one of the scariest on offer is Visage. It takes place in a house that feels inherently evil, full to the brim with echoes of those who’ve been there before you.

Visage is playable on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC. Make sure you play it in the dark with headphones on for the best possible experience.

Psychological horror games offer some of the best experiences in the horror niche, mixing heavy themes and rich stories with deeply unsettling worlds and frightening enemies. These games often overlap with other great genres, like survival horror and action-adventure, and they’re the perfect way to spend a Halloween night.
