The Good
- Another step ahead for the King’s Quest series. The puzzles are well designed and the gameplay solid, allowing KQIV to hold its own even among modern adventures.
The Bad
- Although to a lesser extent, some of the same annoyances of earlier games are still here, including sudden deaths and dead-end situations. The storyline, which was touted as highly emotional by Sierra’s marketing materials, turns out to be somewhat simplistic and cliche.
Our Verdict
Good
A solid adventure that is generally enjoyable, though it lacks enough polish or ambition to recommend without caution.
This game is groundbreaking for many reasons. It was the first game to use Sierra’s improved-technology SCI engine, to feature a female protagonist, and to offer sound card support. King’s Quest IV is a must-play if you like the other King’s Quest games, and worth trying out even if you’ve never played the others.
